Paarl is fairly exceptional in that it has a private town archive, the Drakenstein Heemkring. The archive is on the corner of Main and Auret Street and run by volunteers. I discovered this wonderful resource while I was working on a coffee-table book for a local company, and subsequently served as its chairperson from 2012 to 2016. During this period I wrote a regular column for the Paarl Post based on two local history projects, one in Wellington and the other in Paarl, where we collected oral histories of people affected by forced removals in the 1960s and 1970s.
